The course syllabus of “Introduction to Architectural Design - Visual Means in Architecture” includes the following: Fundamental expressive means, used in architectural representation; methods of representation of architectural objects; architectural symbols used in architectural drawings for walls, windows, doors, stairs, ramps, columns, etc. ; architectural symbols for men, hard standing, cladding, grass, trees, water and the sky.Techiques for architectural drawing formating and composition. Types of lines;symbolic indication of building materials; dimensions of man and man-occupied space, elements of accessibility for disabled people; composition of the basic elemennts of furnishing; furnishing the space, using furnishing symbols, adopted in architectural design.Scales and scaling.Formalization and stylization of visual means. Systemization of existing visual means in repositories and the relation to CAD software.The collage as a means of formatting final architectural drawings.

The lectures trace in chronological order the development of painting, sculpture, graphics and architecture from the primitive communal system until the first half of 20th century. It introduces students to the classification and periodization of the different kinds of art, the development of the genres, the characteristic features of artistic styles and tendencies, art techniques, to the leading artists, presented against the background of the general historical development, and to the synthesis of visual arts and architecture. The goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge of  art periods and styles, to build up and develop their visual memory capacity and to equip them with expertise to recognize the art periods through images.

The English language course is a ninety-hour compulsory course, taught during the two semesters of year1. Its main objective is the successful acquisition of special English as well as consolidation of knowledge and skills at level A2/B1, according to the Common European Framework, recommended by the Council of Europe. The course emphasis is on the communicative function of the language and its use in the authentic context of construction industry. Students are provided with a wide exposure to listening exercises - dialogues from the construction business everyday life, building terminology, writing e-mails, a CV and a covering letter, reading articles about construction innovations and famous buildings, as well as discussions on relevant topics. Supplementary online materials in English are extensively used.Thus, working in teams, students learn how to select, evaluate and summarize information. During beyond class scheduled time, students are to use Moodle at my.vsu.bg, where the lecturer will upload course assignments, provide links for extra materials and exercises, staying in touch with the students throughout the course.

The course project is a bungalow. Each student, provided with a set of reference and a planning scheme, has to develop the basic building elements independently, using an appropriate building technique. The building must be designed with a wooden framework.
Students have to employ at least two details of typical building elements and, if necessary, according to the assistant professor, a technological detail of the building construction technique, which is closely related to the architectural construction solution.

The first topics in the syllabus cover issues related to the measure units, used in geodesy, co-ordinate systems, elements of the theory of approximation, as well as processing of data from land surveying. Subsequently,  issues related to measuring angles, distances and elevations and the use of geodetic tools are presented. These are followed by Issues of making geodetic plans and maps, starting with the required set of reference points and the methods for their setting and use. The last part of the syllabus covers land surveying in construction, related to engineering and surveying research, design and layout of buildings and facilities, constructed with various technological methods, analysis of vertical and horizontal deformations of buildings and facilities.
During their field training (course project), students solve problems on making geodetic plans, design and tracing of buildings and facilities.

Descriptive Geometry is one of the disciplines, comprising the basics of engineering education, aiming at providing students with the skills to make drawings by hand or computer aided. It teaches  the principal projection methods for representation of 3D objects on a plane. These methods enable the visualisation of solids and whole sets of objects in construction and architecture. The syllabus covers three main methods of representing 3D spaces on a plane: Monge, axonometric and perspective projection. Students learn how to represent points, lines and planes in space as well as their relative position. Students solve affinity and metric problems. They trace plane figures, 3D objects and their plane cross sections; find geometric intersections. Thus the correlation between the three models is identified.

  3. Line representation of geometric intersections in axonometric projection.

Theoretical mechanics (Solid Mechanics or Statics) is a course concerned with the equilibrium of forces acting on a body. There are two principal problems to study:

  1. Replacement of a system of forces acting on a body by an equivalent system of forces.
  2. Deduction of the general conditions in which a solid, under the action of applied forces, remains at rest or in uniform rectilinear motion.

Statics aims at making students familiar with problems on reduction of system of forces and problems on equilibrium of bodies and systems of bodies (hinged girders, three-hinged systems, trusses).

Задължителният учебен курс по дисциплината „Английски език“ се състои от 90 уч. часа и е двусеместриален. Основната му цел е успешното усвояване на специализиран английски език и затвърждаване на ниво А2/В1, според общоприетите нива за владеене на език от препоръчителната единна рамка на Съвета на Европа. Акцентът е върху комуникативната функция на езика и използването му в автентичен контекст от сферата на строителната индустрия. Широко  застъпено е слушането на диалози от ежедневието на строителния бизнес, въвеждането на строителна терминология, писането на имейли, CV, съпроводително писмо, четенето на статии за новостите в строителството и световноизвестни сгради, както и дискусии по темите. Използват се допълнителни медийни източници на английски език, като студентите се обучават как, работейкив екип, да селектират, оценяват и резюмират информацията в тях.

В извънаудиторно време е предвидено да се използва Мудъл на ВСУ “Л. Каравелов”, където преподавателят дава задания, предоставя линкове, допълнителни упражнения и е в непрекъсната връзка със студентите.

The material taught in part 1 and 2 of the “Architectural Structures” course provides students with the essential skills to design modern architectural structures, considering the requirements for modern construction systems, as well as those for roof structures over large open plan premises. It draws students’ attention to ecological issues, closely related to building production.

The course presents various frame building structures, as well as some specific for their execution ones, such as the method of multiple-point lift installation, or the use of wholly prefabricated units in building construction.

The course covers some textile architecture topics – pneumatic and tent structures.

Course assignment requirements:

To design open plan buildings with halls for various purposes, based on a given design scheme and construction system.The design must include the ground floor plan, a specific section, a roof plan, two elevations and at least two specific details.

Construction solutions and details.
The course project is a bungalow. Each student, provided with a set of reference and a planning scheme, has to develop the basic building elements independently, using an appropriate building technique. The building must be designed with a wooden framework.
Students have to employ at least two details of typical building elements and, if necessary, according to the assistant professor, a technological detail of the building construction technique, which is closely related to the architectural construction solution.

Main topics: Engineering Geology studies the composition, structure and properties of rocks and soils of the earth's crust, geologic processes, determining the conditions of construction, plus the engineer-geological phenomena occurring in the earth layers of the impact of the already constructed facilities. The academic course "Engineering Geology" explores the substantial composition of the Earth (minerals and rocks) and all geological processes (earthquakes, nowadays vertical and horizontal crustal movements, land slides, talus, erosion, abrasion, carst) that take place in its womb and significantly affect the conditions of construction development. Basic geological knowledge is delivered, Geo-ecological thinking and right attitude towards the environment are being developed. Engineering characterization of rocks and construction soils, and evaluation of the hydrogeological conditions related to construction are carried out. Main engineering issues that civil engineers need to know are regarded, as well as deposits of various rock across the land and soil compounds is studied.

Main topics: The academic subject “Architecture Computer Design” introduces students to computer technologies, being used or applied to Architecture design. Attention is drawn to the concept of Building Information Modelling – BIM plus learning to use the software product whereby this very concept is to be realized.

Students learn about the concept of BIM – the architectural project seen as a database, wherein the architectural elements are grouped into categories, classes, types and exemplars (models). They are taught how to create elements of a building: walls, doors, windows, floor slabs, dropped ceilings, roofs, stairs and landings, railings, terrain(plot), and others; Sts learn to change the parameters of these elements following certain project requirements; Sts learn to create and design images like: floor plans, elevations, cross sections, 3D and photorealistic images; learn to change as well as to make new classes of elements; to develop the project papers holding drawings, specifications, text and images. During the training course, Sts are also introduced to useful practices for utilizing high-produce tools, provided by the particular software.

The end-of-course project assigned is the main means for evaluating students’ knowledge cum their practical skills. The end-of-course project is to be developed within limited time of 2 academic hours, on equal assignment terms, whereupon Students’ grades are finalized.

Architecture of the medieval European Catholic architectural-imagery circle – time of European barbarism, time of the monk architects, Romanesque architecture and the beginning of forming of the national schools of architecture in Europe, Gothic – time of the European cities and their masters.Temples, monasteries, palaces, and residential buildings. Period of time, types of typology, structures, architectural-artistic language, national (ethnic) characteristics of the architecture of Romanesque and Gothic.

Architecture of the Medieval Islamic world – Middle Asia and Iran, as a source of the Islamic architectural vernacular – Middle Asia, Persia, Afghanistan. Аrab caliphate and the period of syncretism – Asia Minor Arab world and the "Arabic" Egypt. Structural Mechanics I is an academic discipline, through which students acquire basic knowledge and skills for calculating cross-section forces, determining lines of influence of the respective dimensions and displacements in planar structures.

Methods for studying a statically determinable system are learned throughout the academic course.

Suitable case studies are dealt with during the practical exercises, and thus the subject matter introduced during lectures is widely illustrated. Students acquire skills to solve most commonly occurring problems through individual way of problem-solving assigned course tasks.

Knowledge gained while studying Structural Mechanics I is at the very core of learning the following academic subjects: Structural Mechanics II (indeterminate systems), Reinforced-concrete, Steel and Wooden structures.

It introduces students to the practical design of objects of public character. It enables the students to deal with the totality and the interaction when designing an architectural building while bearing in mind its public function, it trains them to design a building by the exact reference specifications and requirements; it teaches the principles, the importance and the interrelation of the urban space positioning of the building and its design.

It allows students to think independently as regards the purpose of a building, to develop better logic and reasoning, to be able to give multi-variation ideas independently; to assess their progress cum develop them independently.

Designing schools, universities, cultural centers, theaters and museums; administrative and business buildings, banks; bus stations and airports; stadiums and sports halls, the importance of these buildings within the layout of urban spaces: malls, residential areas, recreational areas, and their symbolic role of the urban identity.

Обучението по дисциплината дисциплините  “Архитектурни конструкции 1 и 2“ дава на обучаемите  основни познания за проектирането на съвременните архитектурни конструкции, запознава студентите с най-новите постижения в тази област, с цел ефективната им реализация в строителната практика.

Формират се умения за самостоятелна работа при проектирането на архитектурни конструкции с отчитане на изискванията на съвременните строителни системи и на покривните конструкции над помещения с големи подпорни разстояния.

Насочва вниманието на студентите върху проблемите, свързани с опазването на околната среда в  непосредствена връзка със строителното производство.

В дисциплините  “Архитектурни конструкции 1 и 2“ са разгледани различните скелетни строителни системи, както и такива от особен характер по начин на изпълнение, като метода на многоточковия подемен монтаж или използване на обемни клетки, при строителството на сгради.
Разгледани са някои въпроси и на текстилната архитектура – пневматичните и тентовите конструкции.

Курсовият проект:
По зададена: планировъчна схема, преподавана строителна система на сгради с голямо подпорно разстояние да се проектират зални сгради с различно предназначение. Съдържанието на проекта включва: разпределение на приземен етаж, характерен разрез; план на покрива; две фасади; поне два характерени детайли.

The academic course "Installations in buildings" introduces students to the scope, content, sequence and requirements for activities related to the running and fixing of various types of engineering installations in buildings - electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other systems. Another main focus of the course is on different types of installation nets, their purpose and their components being part of the construction of buildings and facilities; basic technical, regulatory and structural requirements for different types of installations, as well as design principles and dimensioning of various engineering systems.

The course project requires an individual assignment for each student. It may be developed independently as it undergoes phases, for it is based on specific instructions given to the exercises. The course project sections are submitted to and checked over by a professor - during academic or consultation hours. Eventually, a final approval is given, evaluation is made and defense of the course project takes place.

The curriculum of the course, "Steel Structures" contains:
Building structure - definition according to Eurocodes (EC). Types of steels. Range of steel products for steel constructions. Basics of the method in border states, according to EC. Bearing capacity of cross sections and steel members. Connections and joints - welded, bolted and riveted. Beams and beam structures. Columns - types, construction and dimensioning. Trusses - types, construction and dimensioning. Single-storey frame structures - types. Construction of roof and wall falsework. Construction of overhead lighting. Single-storey industrial buildings. Types of cranes and support crane structures. Spatial strengthening of planar structures of buildings - with and without cranes and of a different structure of the structural elements. The project on Steel Structures is a project of the steel supporting structure of one-storey industrial building without cranes or overhead lighting. The columns are solid, whereas the beams are truss-like.  A compositional decision of the construction is made - plans, sections and perspective drawings so as to develop the system for its spatial strengthening.

The following construction elements are to be given dimensions – „П”- shaped hot rolled purlin – profile and a roof truss.

Structural Mechanics part 2 is an academic subject whereupon students acquire basic knowledge and skills not only for calculating internal forces, but also for determining lines of influence and displacements in statically indeterminate planar structures. Students, also gain knowledge in the area of sustainability and building dynamics of systems.

The course covers the methods for calculating the above-mentioned statically indeterminate systems: force method, displacement method, mixed method, combined method and finite element method (FEM), sustainability and building dynamics of systems. During the exercises appropriate case study problems are solved and thus is illustrated the material presented in the lectures. Students acquire skills to solve the most common problems in practice by independently solving individual assignments. The acquired knowledge and skills shall be verified by two tests and in dialogue with the professor in order to authenticate course assignments.

Main topics: The course introduces students to the basic concepts of the modern engineering seismology on nature of earthquakes and their effects on buildings and engineering facilities. It discusses factors determining the seismic risk to a territory and the seismic vulnerability of buildings. Students are introduced to the basic concepts and rules for a composing and detailed design with a view to ensure a favourable seismic behaviour of buildings and facilities. Emphasis is placed on specific productions of the Bulgarian and the European standards relating to criteria for regularity and ductility of structures. Typical examples shall be discussed and critical analysis of the architectural and construction decisions shall be made. After a successful completion of the course, students acquire basic knowledge and practical skills to design constructions in seismic areas.

The Course Project consists of individual student design of a one-storey one-opening warehouse wooden load bearing structure of solid coniferous wood. The main dimensions are given and the dimensioning and the corresponding computational checks on key elements of the construction are performed – a truss, a ridge plywood beam and a post as part of a cross frame.

Строителна конструкция – дефиниция съгл. ЕС. Видове стомани. Асортимент на изделията от стомана за стоманени конструкции. Основни положение на метода по гранични състояния, съгласно ЕС. Носимоспособност на напречните сечения и на елементите на стоманените конструкции. Съединения и съединителни средства – заварени, болтови и нитови. Греди и гредови конструкции. Колони – видове, конструиране и оразмеряване. Ферми– видове, конструиране и оразмеряване. Едноетажни рамкови конструкции - видове. Конструкция на покривното и стенното ограждане. Конструкция на горното осветление. Едноетажни производствени сгради. Видове кранове и подкранови конструкции. Пространствено укрепване на равнинни конструкции на сгради – с и без кранове и при различна структура на конструктивните елементи.

Курсовият проект по Стоманени конструкции представлява проект на стоманената носеща конструкция на едноетажна производствена сграда, без мостови кранове и горно осветление. Колоните са пълностенни, а ригелът е фермов. Прави се композиционно решение на конструкцията – планове, разрези и погледи с развиване на системата за пространствено укрепване.

Оразмерявят се следните конструктивните елементи – столица от г.в. „П” – профил и покривна ферма.

Main topics: Basic concepts and principles in the technology of construction processes. Transport works. Temporary roads. Technological schemes and maps. Construction-technological properties of soils. Soil piercing. Drainage and temporary reinforcement of the excavations. Earthworks with excavators, scrapers, bulldozers, motor graders. Course Assessment 1: Earthworks: The student defines the volume of the earthworks according to their knowledge. They find right balance and the distribution of the earthworks. They select and offer sets of machines and technological schemes to carry out the excavation works.

Course Assessment 2: Reinforced Concrete Works: The student chooses an effective type of formwork, defines the load and put up the dimensions of the main formwork. They construct and graphically present the basic elements of formwork forms and scaffoldings. They set the deadlines for removal the formwork. They selects efficient sets of forms.

Course Assessment 3: Construction and assembly works: Each student, on an individual assignment, produces constructive-technoloical analysis of the prefabricated building (plant) with the defined parameters of the prefabricated elements and the selected cranes on graphic-analytical method. A scheme of the storage of the elements is also drawn up. The mounting positions and movements of the crane are determined and graphically presented.

Main topics: Basic data for bridge design. Elements and clearances of bridge structures. Loading of bridges – examples for application and combination. Constructive formation and static features of different bridge structures. Static analysis of bridge structures. Dimensioning and construction of bridge elements of ordinary and prestressed reinforced concrete. Typical elements, nodes and parts of steel and steel-reinforced concrete bridge structures – purpose, varieties, specific features. Modern methods of execution. Bridge maintenance and exploitation. Basic methods of rehabilitation, restoration and strengthening of existing bridges.

The course project is connected with the design of the reinforced concrete road bridges and each student has to perform a construction desigh of a reinforced concrete road bridge including the choice of structure, technology, statistical scheme, material and dimensions of all the basic elements of the structure. Study of fixed and variable effects within the meaning of the BSS- EN -1991-2, applied in road bridges. Constructive analysis of the bridge deck and the main beam as elements of the beam grid. Beams dimensioning. Construction of bridge decks and beams from an ordinary reinforced concrete.

Extra time within a duration of 15 hours shall be provided for a tutorial work. The content of the work is to supplement the explanations for the preparation of the course project.

The course introduces the legal and regulatory frameworks, related to the types of Cultural heritage and movable cultural property and specifically the types of arts in the architectural environment such as wall paintings, mosaics, sculpture, and architectural details as an art, carving, wood carving and more. Those are discussed in a chronological aspect, in a historical context and in relation to the characteristics of the temple and profane architecture in the Bulgarian lands from antiquity to the Third Bulgarian State (mid-20c). The course includes methods of attribution of art works, exposition and conservation in an architectural environment, and problems of how to preserve them in museum environment. Diachronic and Synchronic analyses are applied. As a result, the students get to know the movable Cultural heritage, which has a direct relation with the Architecture and acquire the ability to common European context.
